    Visclosky’s Buy America Amendment Approved By House Appropriations Committee

    First District Democratic Congressman Pete Visclosky’s Buy America Amendment to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Interior Appropriations Act was approved today by the House Appropriations Committee. The amendment strikes provisions that would have weakened Buy America requirements for projects receiving funding through the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. Specifically, the amendment removed provisions that would have potentially permitted certain imported slab and finished iron and steel products to meet Buy America requirements.

    Visclosky continues push to fund transit grant programs

    U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Gary, submitted written testimony the House Budget Committee on Thursday that said the Capital Investment Grant programs that would benefit the two major South Shore Line projects are his top budget priority for fiscal year 2019.

    The Federal Transit Administration program could fund half of the West Lake Corridor rail extension and Double Track NWI improvements. The project costs are currently estimated at $665 million and $312 million, respectively.

    On Nature column: Indiana Dunes could thrive as national park

    Indiana could soon join the ranks of the 28 states that are home to at least one national park. In March 2017, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, seeking to change the designation of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to Indiana Dunes National Park. On Nov. 1, 2017, H.R. 1488 passed in the House and now awaits a vote in the Senate.

    Officials hail completion of joint Lake Station-Gary sewer project

    The cities of Gary and Lake Station celebrated the completion of a joint $2.4 million sewer improvement project Thursday that officials said will decrease the threat of residential sewer backups. U.S. Rep. Peter J. Visclosky, D-Gary, joined Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Lake Station Mayor Christopher Anderson at the Gary Sanitary District's pumping station at 15th Place and Clay Street to mark the project's completion.

    Grant programs that would aid South Shore Line are expanded in federal budget bill

    Region officials involved in the South Shore Line's expansion projects said the 2018 spending bill making its way through Congress would aid their cause by preserving and expanding the grant program that would help fund the projects.

    The 2,232-page, $1.3 trillion appropriations bill includes $2.6 billion for the Capital Investment Grant programs the South Shore projects depend on. That total is more than 10 percent above the amount authorized in the most recent federal five-year FAST Act transportation plan, and more than double the recommendation of the Trump administration.

    Steel CEO: 'Dumping in our market will no longer be tolerated'

    Tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports send a strong signal to foreign steelmakers who have long looked to undercut domestic producers to snatch away market share, a steel CEO told the Congressional Steel Caucus on Wednesday.

    ”By imposing tariffs on imported steel, President Trump is sending a strong message that dumping steel into our market will no longer be tolerated," Nucor President and CEO John Ferriola said. "The president’s action will allow us to realize a return on our investments, and will help get the industry on a more sustainable path long-term. The president’s decisive trade action and congressional leadership in enacting tax reform will ensure that the best days of the American steel industry are still to come.”

    Indiana Dunes would be 7th most popular national park

    CHESTERTON — When Indiana Dunes Tourism Executive Director Lorelei Weimer compares the Indiana Dunes to the National Park Service’s most popular parks, the Dunes would rank seventh, she said. Combining attendance figures for both Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park, there were 3.58 million visitors in 2017, she said, which puts it just below Yellowstone National Park’s 4.1 million visitors.

    As vice chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, I supported the president’s initiative to undertake the Section 232 investigation of the consequences of illegally traded steel on our national security and economy and I appreciate his action. I will continue to closely monitor the implementation and enforcement of this action, particularly as it relates to exemptions or modifications for countries, products, or the duration of the relief.
